Excel to CSV: Extract Spreadsheet Data into a Universal Format
CSV is the universal format for moving data between tools. Converting an Excel .xlsx or .xls file to CSV strips away formatting, formulas, and multiple sheets and leaves you with a clean, portable text file that any database, programming language, or data tool can read without needing Microsoft Excel installed.
ConvertRow processes your Excel file using SheetJS (xlsx.js) entirely in your browser. Upload your .xlsx or .xls file, and the first sheet is immediately parsed and converted to a standard comma-separated CSV. The download starts automatically — no server is involved, no file is stored remotely.
Formula values are exported as their computed results (the value you see in the cell, not the formula text). Formatting, colours, merged cells, and charts are all discarded — only the cell data is retained in the CSV output. This makes the CSV a clean data extract suitable for programming, database import, or analysis.
For best results, ensure the first row of your Excel sheet contains column headers. Sheets with merged cells may produce unexpected results — unmerge cells before converting. If your workbook has multiple sheets and you need data from a specific one, rearrange the sheet tabs so the target sheet is first, then convert.
Common use cases for Excel to CSV conversion:
- Preparing an Excel export for import into a database or CRM
- Stripping formatting from a spreadsheet for use in a data pipeline
- Converting a financial report to a processable flat file
- Sharing data with a tool that does not support .xlsx files
- Reducing file size when only the raw data is needed
Frequently Asked Questions
ConvertRow supports .xlsx (Excel 2007 and later, Open XML format) and .xls (Excel 97–2003 binary format). Both are read by SheetJS in-browser with no server involvement.
The first sheet (Sheet 1) is converted by default. If you need a different sheet, move it to the first position in your Excel file before uploading, or use the sheet selector option if available in the converter.
Only the computed values are included in the CSV — not the formula text. This is the same as what you see in the cell when viewing the spreadsheet. If you need the formula text itself, that is not supported in this converter.
SheetJS detects the data range automatically and includes rows and columns within that range. Completely empty rows or columns at the edges of the data range are typically excluded. Sparse empty rows within the data are preserved as empty CSV rows.
No. The file is read locally by SheetJS in your browser. It never leaves your device. This makes the converter safe for confidential spreadsheets containing financial data, personnel records, or proprietary business information.
