YAML to CSV: Turning Configuration Data into Spreadsheet Rows
YAML configuration files, fixture data, and API specification exports often contain lists of records that are more useful as a spreadsheet. Converting YAML to CSV extracts those records into a flat table that can be opened in Excel, imported into a database, or processed by any CSV-aware tool — without manually transcribing the data.
ConvertRow uses js-yaml to parse your YAML entirely in the browser. Paste a YAML sequence of mappings — the standard format for fixture files, Kubernetes resource lists, and Ansible inventories — and click Convert. Each mapping becomes a CSV row and each mapping key becomes a column header.
All processing is local. Your YAML content is never sent to a server, which is important for configuration files that may contain API keys, credentials, or infrastructure details. The resulting CSV is downloaded directly from your browser without any server round-trip.
For best results, your YAML should be a top-level sequence of mappings (starting with a list of - entries where each item has key: value pairs). Nested mappings and sequences within records will be serialised as YAML strings in the cell. Ensure your YAML is valid before pasting — indentation errors are the most common cause of parse failures.
Common use cases for YAML to CSV conversion:
- Extracting test fixture data from a Rails or Django YAML file for review in Excel
- Converting a Kubernetes ConfigMap data block into a spreadsheet
- Turning an Ansible inventory or variable file into a CSV for reporting
- Processing a Hugo or Jekyll data file for bulk editing in a spreadsheet
- Comparing YAML configuration sets side-by-side in a spreadsheet format
Frequently Asked Questions
The converter expects a YAML sequence of mappings — a list (starting each item with -) where each item is a flat set of key: value pairs. For example: - name: Ada\n role: Engineer. A single mapping (object) is also accepted and treated as one row.
YAML null values (null, ~, or empty) become empty CSV cells. Booleans (true/false) are written as the strings "true" and "false". Numbers are written as their numeric string representation without quotes.
Nested mappings and sequences are serialised as a JSON-like string in the CSV cell. If you need nested data in separate columns, flatten the YAML structure before converting.
No. Comments in YAML (lines starting with #) are ignored by the parser and do not appear in the CSV output. The converter only processes the data nodes.
The converter processes the first YAML document only. Multi-document YAML files (separated by --- dividers) are common in Kubernetes manifests — split them into individual files first if you need to convert each document separately.
