CSV to YAML: A Developer’s Guide to Configuration Data

YAML is the configuration language of the DevOps world — Kubernetes manifests, Ansible playbooks, GitHub Actions workflows, and Rails fixtures all use it. If your data starts as a spreadsheet or CSV export, converting it to YAML is the fastest way to get it into these tools.

What the YAML output looks like

ConvertRow converts each CSV row into a YAML mapping (a block of key: value pairs) and wraps all mappings in a top-level sequence. The column headers become mapping keys. The output is properly indented and can be pasted directly into a configuration file or processed by any YAML parser.

Column naming matters

YAML keys are case-sensitive and most YAML-consuming tools expect a consistent naming convention. Use lowercase snake_case (like first_name) or camelCase (like firstName) column headers in your CSV for the cleanest output. Colons in values are automatically quoted by the serialiser.

Local conversion for sensitive config files

Developer configuration files often contain API keys, credentials, or infrastructure details. ConvertRow converts CSV to YAML entirely in your browser using js-yaml — nothing is sent to a server, so sensitive config data stays on your device.

Popular use cases

Generating Kubernetes ConfigMaps, seeding Rails fixture files, creating Ansible variable inventories, building Hugo or Jekyll data files, and producing CI/CD pipeline configuration from a team-maintained spreadsheet are all common reasons to convert CSV to YAML.
